Outline functionality

In this article, you will learn :

  • What is the Outline functionality,
  • Why using this functionality,
  • Who can use this functionality,
  • What is the difference between an outline and a bookmark.

What is the outline functionality?

With the outline functionality, any bookmarks you've set in a document using Adobe Reader will now be automatically imported into Sherpany. This means you can easily access and open your bookmarked sections directly within the Sherpany platform. This feature is powered by PSPDFKit and is available out-of-the-box, providing a seamless experience for managing your documents.

Why using this functionality?

The outline's functionality enhances your document navigation by allowing you to easily access and manage defined sections. This feature is especially useful for quickly jumping to important parts of a document, saving time, and improving efficiency when reviewing or referencing materials.

Who can use this functionality?

The outline's functionality is available to all users that can open a document, whether being an admin or a member. Both admins and members can enjoy the benefits of this feature when accessing documents, whether through a meeting or from the document library.

What is the difference between an outline and a bookmark?

The terms "bookmark" and "outline" both refer to ways of navigating through a document, but they have distinct differences:

A bookmark is a saved link or reference to a specific location within a document. It acts like a personal marker that can be added by a user to return to important sections. They are often used to highlight or mark specific pages or sections that a user may want to revisit later.

An outline represents the structured table of contents of a document, which can automatically or manually reflect the document’s headings, sections, and subsections. An outline provides a hierarchical view of the document's structure, allowing users to quickly navigate between headings, subheadings, and specific sections.

At the end, bookmarks are more for marking individual points of interest, they allow quick access to specific spots while outlines serve to show the overall structure of a document and allow navigation through its sections.

Information

In Sherpany, you cannot create outlines (also known as bookmarks in Adobe Reader) directly within the application. If you want to include outlines in your document, you’ll need to create them using a PDF editor, such as Adobe Reader, before uploading the file to Sherpany. Once the document is imported, the outlines you’ve added will remain visible, but Sherpany doesn’t offer tools to create or edit them.
